Informational

Our Skin is the largest organ our body possesses. The epidermis, the outermost layer of skin, provides a waterproof barrier and creates our skin tone. The dermis, beneath the epidermis, contains tough connective tissue, hair follicles, and sweat glands. The deeper subcutaneous tissue (hypodermis) is made of fat and connective tissue. By learning about the skin, we have also learned that the choices we make, as well as the environmental factors we face every day affect our skin. As time moves forward our skin shows these effects. But the beauty of smooth youthful skin can be obtained thanks to science.

Laser Hair Removal

Hair can be a blessing and a pain. Most people want plenty of hair on their scalp, but limited hair on the rest of their body. While there are plenty of hair removal options out there, one big drawback of most of them is that the hair grows back, sometimes after just a few days, sometimes after a few weeks. Whether you wax, shave or use a depilatory cream, you have to keep repeating the process, unless you don’t mind if the hair returns.

A laser treatment to remove hair offers a longer lasting option. While you can purchase at-home laser hair removal systems, for the best results you’ll want to see a qualified medical professional for the procedure.

How Does It Work?

During a laser hair removal treatment, a beam of light is directed at the hair follicles. Pigment in the follicles absorb the laser light, which then destroys the hair follicle. Since the laser beam is focused on pigment, people with darker hair tend to see better results from laser hair removal.

How Long Does It Take?

How long the laser hair removal process takes depends on a few things, including the size of the treated area and the amount of hair you have. If you are only getting a small area treated, such as your upper lips or armpits, the treatment can take a just a few minutes. But, if you’ve having your entire legs, your chest or your back treated, the process might take an hour or several hours.

For some patients, laser hair removal is a one and done process, meaning they see desired results after just a single treatment. Others may need several treatments to get the results they want, due to the pattern of hair growth or the amount of hair they have. For example, if certain hair follicles are in an inactive state when you go in for treatment, you’ll need a repeat treatment to remove them later. While the results from the treatment are long-lasting, they aren’t always permanent.

Does It Hurt?

You may feel a bit of discomfort during laser hair removal, as heat is involved in zapping the hair follicles. It’s very rare for people to feel outright pain, though. It is much less painful then waxing. Your laser technician will be using a laser with a safire cooling tip to chill the area before it zaps for added comfort.

How to Get Ready for It

There are several things you should do before going in for laser hair removal. You’ll want to have a consultation with us. We will take a look at your medical history and overall health and either recommend the treatment to you or not. We’ll also give you an idea of how many treatments you can expect and the cost.

Before your treatment, there are two things you need to do. The first to is avoid sun exposure. You’ll want to avoid sunning yourself for about six weeks before your treatment. Exposure to the sun can lead to a tan, which can make laser hair removal less effective or can increase the risk that you’ll have pigmentation problems after the treatment. We will usually recommend that you avoid the sun for about six weeks after the procedure.

You may also want to put aside your usual method of hair removal in the weeks leading up to your laser treatment. Waxing or hair removal creams disrupt the hair follicle, which makes a laser treatment less effective. The only hair removal option that’s recommended before a laser treatment is shaving, since it doesn’t affect the follicle. Usually, the treated area will be shaved or trimmed by the doctor before the laser procedure.

Usually, the hair will fall out a few weeks after the treatment. You may have some side effects, such as redness of the skin, irritation or skin discoloration after your procedure. While redness and irritation usually fade after a few hours or days, the skin discoloration can remain for a few weeks.
